Paul joined the National Rivers Authority as Head Office Conservation Officer in 1991 and became Head of Conservation and Ecology at the Environment Agency from 1998 until 2011, retiring early when the Agency began major staff reductions. He co-wrote ‘Rivers: a natural and not-so-natural history’ with Nigel Holmes which was published in 2014 as part of the acclaimed British Wildlife Collection Series. He is currently an Associate Editor for Aquatic Conservation. He has been a member of the FBA since the early 1980s and was a member of the FBA Council during 2002-6.
