Martyn says:
“The focus for my work has been compressing information about the complex world of benthic microbial communities into useful nuggets that can be understood and interpreted by non-technical lay people.  A long-term interest in visual art led to me trying to capture the essence of these communities in paintings and drawings, initially to illustrate seminars and lectures but, later, as works of art in their own right.   The steps involved in examining freshwater specimens at high magnification inevitably results in a highly distorted view of the natural world and, paradoxically, a leap of imagination is required if observations are to be grounded in reality.”
