CANCELLED: Identifying Macroalgae and Filamentous Algae (Beginner)

A two-day course on how to recognise larger freshwater algae.

Due to government guidelines relating to social distancing in response to COVID-19, we will only be running courses at a capacity of 8 students per course. The safety of our staff and course attendees is our highest priority and as such all participants will be expected to observe a 2m distance while in the FBA building, including the laboratory, as well as wear a mask for any indoor tuition.

Description:

 Field and laboratory-based exercises will introduce participants to the biology and identification of those freshwater algae most likely to be encountered during LEAFPACS and other freshwater surveys. An introduction to the use of macroalgae for rapid assessment will also be included. Martyn Kelly is a freelance consultant, specialising in the use of algae for environmental monitoring. Allan Pentecost, of the FBA, has studied algae for 50 years and has published many research papers and a book on algal ecology and taxonomy. Lunch is provided for the duration of the course.
