Colin Bean


Honorary Professor at University of Glasgow

Colin is a freshwater biologist with specific research interests in fish ecology, evolutionary processes within fish populations and conservation biology. He previously worked at Ulster University, Stirling University’s Institute of Aquaculture and was previously a post-doctoral research fellow at the Freshwater Biological Association.

Within the Policy & Advice division of a Government conservation agency (NatureScot), Colin manages the Species Interactions Team. As an adviser with a national remit, he is involved in the development of legislative and policy tools which aid freshwater conservation, and runs scientific research and monitoring programmes to support this work.

Colin has very strong academic links and holds an honorary professorship at the University Glasgow where he works most closely with colleagues in the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment. Outwith the UK, he has previously held a visiting professorship at the Universidad Austral de Chile and has worked with a wide range of Government-funded research providers (such as the British Council and the Department for International Development) on a range of teaching, research and policy development projects overseas.

He also acts as a peer reviewer for a range of scientific funding bodies, such as NERC, Research Council of Norway, Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, the EU and others.
